Westlawn's Winning Words

Each Tuesday and Thursday morning students who arrive to school by 7:45 a.m. until the bell rings and enters the gym, listen attentatively as Mrs. Nelson, ARI Reading Coach reads a book. She introduces the new winning word first in the gym and then follows up with the latest winning word along with the part of speech, definition and a sentence during the morning announcements. Then, Mrs. Finley, Principal use the same winning word in a sentence as well. Afterwards, She asked that students submit a winning word sentence to be read during the afternoon announcement. Finally, the winning word is displayed in the atrium on "Westy" our school mascot, classrooms, Westlawn's website and DMS monitor located outside the office in the lobby area.
Students will focus on the winning words all year. There is an annual vocabulary bee held usually in April for students to compete to see who will be the next vocabulary champ and who's classroom will receive the vocabulary class trophy. Be sure to keep up with the winning words and help your child.
